Milk was first bottled in open glass in 1878, with a sealed lid version introduced in 1884. With this development, daily milk deliveries became common and commercialized! Continuing through the years, this service reached its peak by the 1950s, however, after WW2 many families moved from their rural homes and into suburban areas, where grocery stores had instant access to dairy products. In addition, the rise of refrigerators in households slowed the need for milk delivery services altogether. By 1975, just 7% of Americans had reported they were still receiving milk deliveries. Although some small dairy farms and artisan milk producers still offer home deliveries today, the traditional milkman delivery model is a charming relic of our past.
